What are CBD’s and the Endocannabinoid System?
The endocannabinoid system exists to respond to indigenous cannabinoids produced by the human body. However, scientists have learned that the system will also recognize and respond to cannabinoids from external sources, including the phytocannabinoid cannabidiol. According to the National Institutes of Health, manipulating the endocannabinoid system by introducing external cannabinoids like CBD is very useful in treating a variety of medical ailments especially inflammation issues.
The Difference Between Hemp & Cannabis CBD
Their are very clear differences between the hemp and cannabis CBD. Hemp, the male plant, is an isolated cannabinoid. Cannabis, the female plant, has a plethora of supporting cannabinoids and terpenoids that provide medicinal value.
In terms of its molecular structure CBD is CBD is CBD. It’s the same molecule whether the CBD comes from hemp, cannabis or a test tube. Hemp generally has a CBD concentration around 3.5 percent which is pretty low, but the concentration of THC is even lower, usually less than 1 percent. Hemp meets the criteria of being low in THC, but its level of CBD is relatively low especially in comparison to certain cannabis strains, which have significantly higher amount of CBD than industrial hemp. CBD and THC are always present in cannabis /hemp /marijuana. However hemp has less than a .1 percent THC value compared to 1-20 percent average in cannabis flower as well as a lower value of cannabinoids.
Whereas hemp is bred for fiber, cannabis is bred for resin. What that means is that "hemp" strains produce lower amounts of CBG, the "proto cannabinoid" that turns into both THCA and CBDA, so they produce less CBD than a "high CBD" cannabis flower. Therefore, to get a similar amount of CBD from it requires more plant material, more extraction, and a longer clean up. Easier stated ~ a whole lot of work for a very little amount of medicine. Hemp is an industrial sludge by product, it is used for rope, cardboard boxes, fishing nets , and so on. For the body, just think of hemp as an antioxidant.
Considering the lack of any real flowering going on at the hemp level (male), it’s difficult to believe there's much CBD value if any.
Another big difference is the isolated cannabinoid (hemp based), the other (cannabis) has a plethora of supporting cannabinoids and terpenoids that provide medicinal value. Using just the hemp plant as medicine dismissed the entourage effect of all homeopathic plant based medicine. For effective medicinal use, the whole plant panel must be present for healing.
To sum it up in one sentence ~ Hemp is the workhorse and Cannabis is the medicine. Both have value in our lives. One to heal our bodies and one that allows us to live in harmony with the natural world as hemp truly is food, shelter, clothing and fuel with little impact on the environment.
